Research

Urban train systems spread all over the world so it is worth noting that at this time, 400 cities in 40 countries use the urban railway. In the holy city of Mashhad in Iran, municipal authorities provided preliminary design studies in 1991 which led to the preparation of Mashhad Transportation Services in early 1994 by the Transportation Studies Center of Sharif University of Technology.

After analyzing various options and studies, the best route got a priority which was from the end of the Fadayian Islam street (Nakhrisi) to the end of Vakil Abad Boulevard; because, based on estimates for the year 2016, Demand for travel by public transport on this route is so large that the number of passengers in each direction during peak hours is over 17,000 and to respond to this demand, a rail system of LRT train urban style with adequate capacity which meets the /technical specifications, is required. To provide sufficient capacity, 33 trains with a capacity of 600 passengers, with intervals of at least 7.2 minutes will be used in this route by length of 19 km. Therefore, taking into account the physical conditions of the city and Passenger Transport, the research phase of this project was started.

At this time there are 3.5 million daily transportations in the holy city of Mashhad which will reach to 5 million movements per day over 10 years.

Comprehensive studies of Mashhad transportation between 1994 and 1999 and development research of railway transport between 2002 and 2004 was conducted by the Institute of Transportation, Sharif University of Technology. Based on researches approved by the Traffic Council of State and stated in Traffic Supreme of Iran cities, Mashhad needs 4 metro lines. According to existence of new cities such as Golbahar in the north and Binalud in south, after some researches, the development of subway lines in these cities was also expected and its ratification process has been done.

According to the studies of this project, the funding method will be in the form of credit and based on Sharif University of Technology researches, this project will attract about  percent of trips in the city of Mashhad.
